A Simpler Idea For The New Year

A Simpler Idea For The New Year


I’m intrigued by the idea of minimalism. I’m seduced by images of simplicity. I’m comforted by the thought that we can live with less.

This is especially strong after the Christmas season. I feel busy but unproductive, unfocused. The excess stuff in my life is much less excess than it used to be. Its not clutter that’s the culprit now. The busy-ness is in my mind.

The season brings lots of emotions,


juggling of people and priorities.

The on-going arranging of a blended family,

for an extended family,

for friends, home, and community

for me and for everyone else

Its making my brain feel fuzzy.

After making my long list of resolutions and tucking them away, I’m going to try to do one thing new this year. I going to start my day differently. Everyday.

Instead of reading the news, emails, or Facebook,

Instead of rushing to make coffee,

I’m just going to sit on my yoga mat. I may stretch or try a pose. But mainly, I’m just going to meditate. For 5 minutes, or 10, or 30.
